I don’t know about you but I’m feeling 22!
Today, on my twenty-second birthday and the first day of the second month of 2016, I am feeling extra reflective. I have been so lucky in the past year to surround myself with the type of people who bring so much to the table and make my days better just by being in them. I’ve also been able to do what I love in beautiful places and I’m so incredibly lucky.
My original title for this post was “why I’m making 2016 a year without resolutions” and then which probably would’ve been a bit better since FINALLY posting about the new year the first week of February was probably the least ambitious thing ever. BUT as we all know, my philosophy about nearly everything in life is pretty much “better late than never.”
I thought for a long time about how I want to go about this year as far as goals go. In the past I have made goals or resolutions but have been so all over the place (quite literally) that achieving them can often be more difficult than I had originally thought. This year I figured I would do things a bit differently and instead make a dream board for goals of all types, as well as setting short-term goals because I know they are more achievable for me, at least right now.
Instead, I’ve decided to spend my time on the things I find to be most important. I read this great article a few weeks ago that I cannot seem to find since but the general gist of it was to do the things you do each day because they bring a joy or a purpose to your life. Obviously there are chores and work to be done that you aren’t necessarily jumping for joy about but, but as a whole I want to do activities and surround myself with people who enrich my life. It’s important to let go of what no longer serves me.
I am lucky enough to have spent this past year making so many new friends, adventuring, and feeling a lot of joy. This past weekend was spent with my family, boyfriend, and best friends who all made me smile. My roommates even surprised me by beautifully decorating our house for my birthday- complete with balloons, streamers, and champagne! I had SUCH a wonderful birthday filled laughter, music, and even a gorgeous 50+ degree run! I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way and I’m so happy every day about the people and situations I surround myself with.
One of my roommates received her Birch Box during the first week or two of the new year. It came with the usual beauty samples, but also had a few stickers to use on the cover of the box which read “2016: Year of ___________.” I truthfully can’t remember what all the other options were but we opted for ambition, because we figured we all have a crazy/transformative year ahead and we need a little ambition. That idea has stuck with me and I want to continue to incorporate it into my daily life in the year ahead.
I have SO many exciting things coming up in 2016 like turning 22, finishing my senior thesis, graduating college, moving in with my boyfriend, starting grad school, and all of the adventures in between. If my 22nd year treats me half as well as my 21st, I’ll consider myself a pretty lucky girl. I hope your 2016 is fabulous and you’ll take a second to think about what serves you in this upcoming year.
